"STATE OF THE ART" The "art" of crusading for what you believe in, and using the gifts one has been blessed with is indeed a challenging, yet essential part of our lives. I believe we are obligated to do this… in an energetic and professional manner… putting forth time, talent, and money to the development of each crusade. Making "artistic pool" magnetic and competitive for all has been one of the most demanding crusades for many individuals over the past two decades. It has especially come full circle from the original days of "trick shot" competitions and selected challenges… to one of current status. On pages 2 and 3 you will find the history of "artistic pool." It will help you better understand its growth, changes, and future direction. In May of 2001 a "storybook" scene unfolded in the 2nd Annual WPA World "Artistic Pool" Championship in Las Vegas, NV. A player emerged from apparent defeat in the BCA North American "Artistic Pool" Qualifier. Mr. Steve Geller made a monsterous masse to put him in 2nd place behind this writher and a hopeful berth in the World Finals. Then the "miracle" - Mr. Charles Darling of Washington, MO accomplished a must make shot of the same challenge… catapulting him back into second place. The audience went wild… or, should I say… wilder!! The excitement of the moment couldn't have been more appropriate, as Mr. Geller was the first to congratulate this world-bound contender. Mr. Darling didn't look back… attacking a field of the finest "artistic pool" cueists in the world with precision, grace, and courage. What is left to say? Charles Darling became 2nd WPA World Champion, and joined the list with Mike Massey from 2000. Special thanks to the WPA General Committee, the WPA Shot Selection Committee, and the myriad of individuals that have helped to make this uni-cue form of cue sport activity exciting, successful, and… what I believe to be… the future of our great sport… in ways no one could imagine. A special thanks to John Lewis, Jorgen Sandman, and Steve Lillis. Their desire to see the crusade continue to new heights is extremely encouraging, and sure to inspire new player interest, sponsor attachment, and audience attraction. I once again want to wish Mr. Lillis my best in his continued chairman position and the journey to see "artistic pool" shine throughout the worldwide billiard community. May every fan/player of our sport enjoy the ride. I declare the "state of the art" is good and a special gift to us all. May we steward over it in the proper way!! Best Victories… The "Artistic" Way, |
